Default Necro/Monk for the Noob

Hello all...yes...I am new. I just got GW and I am loving it. I currently playing to experiment more then anything. I have a Warrior/Elementalist that is working pretty well right now, but I just started a Necromancer and I am seriously thinking of adding Monk when I can. This thread has lots of yarn to it so I am wondering what is everyone's consensus on this. I just started him and love the make a minion ability. Just wish I came across more bodies to create more of them at once....and they lasted longer.

In you all's opinion, how would I create a leader of minions type of character. I want to raise up a bunch of undead whatchamacalits go into battle and heal them and raise more as needed. Someone said try the necro/monk combo but I am new enough that I am not sure of the best way to do it or even if monk would work.

If you give us more details, like which campaigns you own, we can help you that much better. ;p As for playing a Minion Master, I've rarely used monk healing spells for healing my minions. I rely on a combination of [Blood of the master], [Animate Vampiric Horror], [Signet of Lost Souls] and my monk friends to heal me. :3

I just have the core one with the eyes of the north expansion. I am not doing PVP. Like I said just started and want to have fun at first. Another one is someone said was Necro/Ranger. Like I said I want to do the whole minion master thing. I'll defiantly read what horseradish posted as well.

Then scroll some more and read what Ensign says. He knows his stuff.

What you really want is:

* Bone Fiend
* Blood of the Master

Bone fiends are minions that not only do most damage, they also are ranged damage dealers thus they are much less vulnurelable.

Blood of master is very powerfull heal that can keep your army up trought battles.

This both makes minions last longer.

Lack of bodies is puzzling ... there is usually enough bodies for minion masters to create armies comfortably, especially early in game. Can you elaborate?

People used to use healing prayers skill Heal Area or Healing Circle as aditional minion heal as well as self heal, but that is kinda old strategy. But it should be okay-ish thing to do while you are still new to game as you dont have much chice and lack skills to make more sturdy builds.

Later in game you will be able to chage your secondary profession, so for starters i suggest choosing the one that has resuseable resurrection skill (Monk, Ritualist, Paragon).

So yes, monk is okay choice, but you will eventually move on.

OP: If you would like to give hexes a try, go /Me. There are quite a few complimentary skills, as well as interrupts.

You're interested in minion mastery and confined to prophecies and eye of the north skills, but that's more than ok, your minion choices will be a bit limited, but you've got [Animate Bone Fiend] and [Animate Bone Horror], the two most solid minions in the game IMO.

With the link horseradish provided you'll find that your idea to use monk secondary is a fairly popular one and one of the more effective options, you'll gain some nice self & minion heals, namely [Heal Area].

Speaking from experience minion mastering is very fun, but don't ever feel like that's all your necro can do. If you eventually tire of minions be sure to check out the necro's other abilities; curses can be absolutely devestating and with eye of the north you'll have access to some very cool skills for making a variable and handy "support necro".

Anyways hope you have fun with your new necro!

Since you'll have some idle time as a Minion master, you might want to add some support skills. You could go monk secondary and support the party with skills like Aegis, and Protective Spirit.
If you choose to get away from playing a minion master, using Spiteful Spirit is really helpful and does a lot of damage. Barbs and Mark of Pain from the curses line will also contribute to your party's damage output.

Thank you! Thats what I am looking for. I have one of those spells....I am only like 4th that PC so I am just starting. I think it would be cool to try. Also...how does one make a minion do stuff. Say there is a trap. How do I get it to go over to it and set it off. Or say pick up something and bring it to me?

Once a minion is created, you cannot have it do certain things for you. If the minion starts attacking something and you run away, the minion will not follow.

minions are not quite so utilitarian, you can think of them as expendable grunts in your personal army more or less, there's no direct minion commands or selection bars (something most necro's have been irked about since the beginning of time). However they aren't completely out of your control, they follow some very simple rules of engagement.

Your minions are loyal to you and you alone so they'll always stay close to you out of combat (making heal area a very useful heal) unfortunately this also means if you die your minions will go berserk and kill anything and everything (a very important thing to remember when partying with others)

You do have more combat control over you minions than is first apparent however, any target you attack with your wand/weapon will be targeting priority #1 for your minions and soon after you make the first strike your minions will go charging in after the target. By doing this you can roughly place the majority of your minion's fire on priority targets, they'll still attack their own targets however, usually to defend themselves or if they get close enough to an enemy before you've picked one to wand/attack.

You mentioned dealing with traps, minions are great with dealing with them, although usually they need a target on or around the traps to act as mine-sweepers (they run in to attack and take out the traps for you) it's not perfect but they're still wonderfully handy buggers to have around.

As for picking up objects that's unfortunately left up to you or a party member, minions lack the smarts for such a complex procedure (additionally some look like they'd physically have trouble actually grasping anything)

anyways hope I helped a bit
